Release Part 1, Updates, and Obscure Fury Spoilers!

Hello mah beauties,

Today is July 26th, which means it’s the day that Amazon ships book four, Eye of the Tempest! It’s already been out all over the place in bookstores, and it’s not quite out in e-reader (that will be August 1, the “official” release date). But if you pre-ordered a hard copy, it should be winging its way to you as of now.

So yay! Release Part 1 is in full effect. Sorry those of you with e-readers have to wait till August 1, but it’ll come shortly, I promise. ;-)

As for me, I’ve had the loveliest week! On Wednesday of last week, I had an absolutely hilarious dinner with UK writers Karen Mahoney and Suzanne McLeod, and with American expat writer Stacia Kane. Here are some photos of the evening. First up are Suzanne and Karen, looking gorgeous:

And next we have Stacia and me, looking like fierce (if giggling) creatures:

As for the giggling, Stacia might have been grabbing my boob. Again. ;-)

Thursday night I had dinner and watched a movie with Dr. Ruth. We watched Black Swan, which was very creepy. It made me frightened of ballet and also made me want to eat cake.

Friday I headed north to meet my friend and travel up to Whitby on the Northeast coast of England. I’d been pretty sure I wanted to set the final battle of the fifth book in Whitby, and was convinced it was perfect pretty much as soon as I saw the place. Whitby is absolutely gorgeous, with a seaside charm all of its own. In fact, it reminded me much more of Eastport, ME, than it did other British seaside cities, such as Brighton. This makes sense, as it’s really a working fishing village with a side in tourism, rather than having an economy based on tourism. But it was an entirely stunning place, made even funnier by the Dracula connection (Bram Stoker has quite a few scenes set in or based on Whitby) which brings loads of goths to the area. So one minute you’d be walking past a knot of bearded old fishermen smoking pipes, then there’d be a chubby goth couple in full regalia eating fish and chips.

But the book’s ending is really coming together in my mind. I kept playing through different scenes as we were in Whitby, and the place was so powerful an inspiration I couldn’t shut off my brain, even when we were in Scarborough for a day trip. Luckily I didn’t need much mental power, however, as I was being well taken care of.  It was my ideal trip, really, as I was with someone who was originally from that area, and he was the perfect tour guide. All I had to do was wander along behind him and ooh and aah at the sights, a role I rarely get to indulge in, but which I love.

As usual, I took almost no photos, but here are a few that were too weird or funny not to take, plus I did remember to take a few photos for use in the writing. So they’ll be your obscure Fury spoilers for the day!

This picture was from the Whitby museum, full of all sorts of insane shit, like sea bishops. It also has an actual HAND OF GLORY, probably the creepiest thing I’ve ever clapped eyes upon. It was also great timing, as I’d just read Juliet Blackwell’s fabulous Hexes and Hemlines, which utlilizes a Hand of Glory. Here’s a very bad picture of the hand, in all its horrific splendor:

It really was repulsive. Equally cool, if slightly less repulsive, was a weird Victorian Steampunky device made to foretell weather. It looked cool, yes, but it did involve tons of leeches, which lent the device its own slightly repulsive nature. Anyway, its name gave me inspiration for book six, just in case I’m not allowed to use Tempestt Bledsoe:

TEMPEST PROGNOSTICATOR! It’ll be a steampunk Jane, naturally.

Finally, here are some pictures of the abbey, as a bit of cryptic Fury spoiler. Enjoy and see you soon. Londoners, don’t forget my Forbidden Planet signing this Saturday!

Your moment of cryptic Fury spoiler begins now:

Updates! Reviews! Pimpage! LONDON!

Hello my lovelies!

Sorry I’ve been MIA. I had our June residency for our MFA, and that’s always a ton of work (albeit very fun work). Our MFA in Writing Popular Fiction is what they call a “low-residency” degree, meaning that most of the coursework is done long-distance, through on-line classes and through an individual relationship with a mentor. But twice a year, every January and every June, all of our students converge, en masse, to Seton Hill, where we have an intensive five day Residency, full of critique groups, workshops, and tons of other things.

I had a great time at this residency. As usual, I taught our “2s” (second term students) in a module on close reading. I led three critique groups, all of which had some absolutely fabulous stories. Finally, I taught a workshop on Trends in Mystery. Half of the workshop was on trends, the idea of trends, and specific trends in mystery. But it was the very last day of the residency when I led the workshop, and my goal was to leave everyone inspired. So the second half of the workshop was loads of group and individual work, scoping out the scene in mystery (or whatever other genre the attendee writes) and coming up with some ideas for other, future projects. I think it went well, and I know I was inspired at the end of it!

We also had great speakers visiting! The lovely Heather Osborn, editorial director of Samhain, and equally lovely Lucienne Diver, author and agent with the Knight Agency, came in to speak. They were fabulous: super enthusiastic, excited about the business, and really knowledgeable. I also got to spend some bonding time with both ladies, which was great as they’re awesome.

The day after Residency, I packed up and headed to Chicago. I solved my laundry issue (there was not time to do it during Res) by taping shut my hamper and sticking the whole thing in the car. So I basically turned up at my parents like a college freshmen, laundry in tow. It was like an episode of the Cosbys! I’d like to say I was playing the part of Denise, but realistically I’ve always been a Vanessa.

But in the meantime, much has been happening with my upcoming release, Eye of the Tempest! Publisher’s Weekly says that the fourth book “brings even more sass, snark, and supernatural action.” Meanwhile, Romantic Times gave the book 4 1/2 stars, saying that I “keep the action brisk and the emotions sharp.” Don’t cut yourself! ;-)

I’m betting there’ll be Eye spottings in the wild as soon as the middle of this month, but if you need something to read in the meantime, have no fear! First off, Sophie Littlefield’s Bad Day For Scandal came out a few weeks ago. I love this series, and can’t wait to dig into this book!

If you want something in the Urban Fantasy realm, have no fear. K.A. Stewart’s Shot in the Dark is coming July 5th. It looks great! I love these covers:

And speaking of cover love, my critique partner, Diana Rowland, has her ABSOLUTELY AWESOME book My Life as a White Trash Zombie also coming July 5th, although I just saw it yesterday on the shelves of Barnes and Noble:

This cover by Dan Dos Santos absolutely rocks my world, and the book is great. Even if you don’t like zombies I think you’ll like this one, as Diana’s taken the zombie to a whole ‘nother level of trashy-cool.

Kevin Hearne’s Hammered also has a July 5th release. I blurbed the first book of this series and can’t wait to catch up with the rest. These also have great covers, as I greatly enjoy Atticus and his mighty sword.

Releasing from my own publisher, my friend Philip Palmer’s Hell Ship comes out this month, and it looks awesome. I’ll be hanging with Philip in London, and will definitely be digging into this bad boy before I see him. It’s got a skull! And a pirate ship! And I heart it hard:

Last but certainly not least, my other fellow-Orbiter, Gail Carriger, is releasing Heartless today. Happy Book Birthday, Gail! Can’t wait to read it, as I’m a big fan of the series:

So there’s a roundup of some recent/new releases! As for me, I will also be released into the wilds of London tomorrow. I am stupidly excited to get back, as you can imagine. I’ll be there for a whole month, and it’ll be great to see all of my friends, and to finish my fifth book in the country where I wrote my first. It’s all circular, and shit. ;-) I can’t wait to see everyone, and to be back in a real city. I’m at a really good place in my life, and it’ll be nice to be in that great place while also being in an actual great place–London’s a fabulous city and it’ll be nice to give it real twirl rather than just being a regular, week-long tourist.

But don’t worry–I’m sure I’ll be blogging, Facebooking, and Tweeting from London, have no fear! In the meantime, feel free to read some good books. There’s a ton coming out over the summer!

Finally! A Cover for Eye of the Tempest!

Oh, my friends, how I have waited for this day. A number of you have emailed me over the months as various versions of the cover for my fourth book, Eye of the Tempest, have found there way to the surface of the internet. I met most of these emails with silence, ‘m afraid, as I’m a terrible, terrible liar and I’m not supposed to reveal anything about covers until they’ve been officially released by my publishing company.  So I ignored these emails not because I didn’t appreciate people’s enthusiasm about the book, or excitement about seeing what they thought was a new cover, but because I can’t talk about this stuff until it’s official.

But now it’s official! Here’s the final version of my beautiful new cover for Eye of the Tempest:

As you can see, Orbit’s made some changes to the general layout, but the artist, Sharon Tancredi, is still rocking out, doing her thang! Wait till you see the back!

What do you think? I hope y’all like it as much as I do.

Wayfaring Writer review

I’m excited to see all the wonderful comments about book 3, but I’ve been all about book 4 over break. And this morning, I sent in revisions for Eye of the Tempest! It’ll need a few more wee tweaks, I’m sure, but I think I got the bulk of the problems fixed.

So I’m going into January feeling great, as you can probably see from the little reading and New Year’s pep-talk vlog I’ve done for you:

Sometimes, I get a little excited. :-) But you can get excited, too! Because I am doing a CONTEST!

Yes, friends, a contest. Here’s the prize:

1 UK Edition Tempest Rising
1 UK Edition Tracking the Tempest
1 MP3 CD or 1 regular CD of Tempest Rising (your choice)

I will pick a winner on Monday, January 31st,2011, so you’ve got lots of time to rock out with your Jane out.

Yay!

Happy Pre-New Years!

Well, hello there! I hope you’re having as great a vacation as I am! It’s been non-stop parties this week . . . parties here, parties there, parties EVERYWHERE. Also, loads of catching up with friends from all over.

The good news is, I’ve had a blast and I feel myself again. The bad news is, I’m a few days behind in my revisions. I’ve been working pretty steadily, but not quite steadily enough.

So I think I’m going to take one for the team and not do anything super crazy on New Years. While I’d love to take up all mah friend’s offers to get into Chicago and show it how to swing, I think I have to finish book 4.

The thing is, I’m going back to G’Burg the 2nd, and then I have Three Days of Frantic Preparation for our January residency for our MFA program, then I have the residency, and the day after the residency I fly to London.

So, yeah, it’s going to be nutso. And it will be so much LESS nutso if I have my revisions all done and shipped off BEFORE January 2nd, don’t you think?

What’s your opinion on what I should do? Book 4 or par-tay?

As for book 3, it’s all over the wild. As I said, once I get home I’ll do some Contests, Contests, Contests! And at least one vlog for you. With something cheekeh!

But for right now, here’s some Legacy stuff to wet your whistle:

A great review from Book Series Reviews.

An interview with an international giveaway!

Review from Nocturne Romance Reads

Melissa from My World interviews both Anyan  and Ryu with a contest!(these are all separate links.)

And a recent review of Book 1, Tempest Rising, in case you’re wondering what all the fuss is about. ;-)

If you’ve reviewed or interviewed me, and I haven’t pimped you out, remember you can always bother me on twitter, facebook, or email me at iheartselkies(at)gmail(dot)com.

This’ll probably be my last post till I get back to G’Burg and start the Release Madness for Tempest’s Legacy. Have a FABULOUS New Years, drink something bubbly for me, remember not to make any stupid resolutions but instead make GOALS that you can achieve, and remember to buy Tempest’s Legacy! ;-) I heart you guys, and I can’t wait to see what y’all get up to in the New Year!

Happy Holidays, ERRYBODY!

First off, I’d like to wish everyone a warm and wonderful holiday!

It’s a total winter wonderland here in Illinois, and the snow is still coming down. Here’s the view from my mom’s home office…

It’s like I’m in a snow globe! Awesome!

Lemme just say, I have loved being at home. This pre-Xmas part of the trip has been mostly family and rest and work time. I’ve been sleeping like a cat, and when I’m not sleeping I’m revising Eye and going out with the fam.

Eye of the Tempest is shaping up a treat. and I’m really digging the direction it’s going. I had a Major Treadmill Epiphany (the other thing I’ve been doing, while home, is working out like a crazy woman) in which I realized what was at the heart of my revisions issues. Basically, I’d missed the mark on who Jane is, in this book, after her adventures in Legacy.

So the work is going great, and I hope to have Jane shipped back to the Editrix before New Year’s.  As for the fam, they’re fabulous. And I’ve made tons of ridiculous plans with my Chicago friends for after the holidays, and I’m so looking forward to letting the hair down. And speaking of hair…

Here’s a Before Korean Ladies shot and an After Korean Ladies shot:

I love them so much. Why can’t I take them to Pittsburgh? That said, I love my PA stylist, too, and I’ve taken a picture of the dye Chloe uses on me, so that hopefully we can source it back in PA. Then I can be RED all the time! Yay!

As for the Post Holiday Shenanigans, I can’t WAIT.  My friends in Chicago are some of the smartest, funniest, most loyal people I know, and I can’t wait to soak up their vibe. I feel like I’ve gone a bit dull, and they all agree (that’s the beauty of real friends–they tell you when you’re being stupid). But they’re also on hand for an intervention, and they’ll have me whetted to a razor’s edge in no time. ;-)  That said, it can’t be all play, as I still have a lot of stuff to do before our January MFA residency. But I’ll get it all done, and enjoy some playtime as well.

And speaking of playtime, nearly all my plans are made for my Cheeky European Trip 2011. I’ve got all my train tix booked, and rental flat, etc. I cannot WAIT to go. We’re hitting Paris for an International Ladies Night. Dr. Ruth is going, of course, as well as my friends from Ireland, Denmark, Holland, and Norway. It’s going to be a blast. Then it’s back to England and a bit more travel on my own, this time to visit another friend, whom I’m stupidly excited to see. We’re planning some outrageously naughty shenanigans, and that’s exactly what I need right now. My life has been naughty-free for a while, so no wonder I feel like a pair of kindergarten shears.

I will also be doing some business in London, of course. I’ll be visiting the Orbit UK offices. They’ve got loads afoot there, and we’ll be going over their ideas. I’m also very much hoping to get together with the delightful Philip Palmer, and maybe do some fun promo with him. I also want to convince him that we should write a BBC radio play together, because that would make me the happiest bunny that ever bunnied. Did ya hear that, Philip? ;-)

PS: I’ll be sending you a “Rabbit Heart” blog post shortly, just to sweeten the pot.

So that’s what I’m doing! OH, and Legacy is being spotted ALL over the wild. Because of the holidays, I’m not going to do loads of pre-release stuff. BUT I will be back home in January, doing oodles of contests and stuff, and hoping to take advantage of all the giftcards you’ve received from Santa. ;-)

But I’m not the only one who’s been busy this January, and the ever lovely and fabulous Jackie Kessler has done a fantastic League roundup, of all the stuff we Leaguers have coming out now or very soon.

Another busy person has been Laurel Dinnage, who made these very sweet pictures of Jane! Thanks, Laurel!

I’ve also got an interview up at Savvy Authors, and more to come, shortly. You can also see Jane’s Holiday Wishlist, here, at the Vampire Book Club.

In the meantime, enjoy your holidays, everyone! Y’all have been such a treat for me to get to know, and your support and your love of Jane has meant the world to me. With the class I’m teaching at my new job, I thought a lot about the author/reader relationship this semester, and I’ve realized just how lucky I am to have you. I love knowing you’re out there, and hearing what you have to say about Jane and her adventures. So thank you all, a million times over! I’d send you each and everyone a t-shirt from London, but I’m broke. So go buy Legacy!  ;-)

Merry merry, and all that jazz. *huge hugs*

Jane True Über Alles!

First of all, let me crow to the winds that I’ve just sent Book Four, Eye of the Tempest, off to my editrix! I always have stuff to do to them at this stage, so it’s not done. But it’s a HUGE first step. And, again, I’d like to thank my AMAZING beta readers (Christie Ko, James Clawson, and Mary Lois White), along with my critique partner, the lovely Diana Rowland, for giving me great ideas for revisions on this round. The book is 100% stronger now than it was when they received it the first time, and that’s all because of their great insights and suggestions. I have the best friends EVAH.

And speaking of cool friends, check this out! Sophie Littlefield, about whom I blogged last week, was named as one of 2010s Most Notable crime authors by the New York Times! Here’s the link! I’m so excited for her, I could spit. I’m so lucky to have such talented people in my life, especially when they’re also awesome human beings who enjoy meat from zeppelins!

I’m also lucky to have my books out in Germany! You can read my excellent German (I am so fluent!) here. There’s a “search inside” sort of deal like they have on Amazon, that allows you to flip through the first forty pages. I’ve also got an interview with Darkstar up in English and in German. Isn’t my German amazing?

And I warned you that I’d probably have another REALLY ACCURATE German cover for the sequel, and I was not disappointed. For Splash 2, I mean, Tracking the Tempest, we have the following:

While this appears to be a book about how Mermaid-Barbie kidnaps and tortures Santa’s favorite reindeer, it’s actually Tracking the Tempest. Okay, they are beautiful covers, and I’m very grateful to be published in Germany. But if you picked this up expecting some Little Mermaid-esque shenanigans, don’t blame me!

Good News, Everybody!

Book Four, Eye of the Tempest, has a completed rough draft! Next weekend will be some major revising, then I send it to my beta readers and critique partner on November first.

Yay.

And on that note, I will be taking a Blogging Vacation for a few weeks. I’ll be back November 8th, with a vlogged reading from Tempest’s Legacy and, hopefully, some other exciting things to gab about. But right now, I have to get this MS ready to send out, and I have an absolute butt-load of grading to do, at the same time.

So don’t miss me too much, and know that I will come back refreshed, thrilled to see you, AND with some teasers for Legacy. And don’t forget, if you’re in the area, that I’ll be in Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, November 6th. Check my Upcoming Appearances page for more details.

Ciao for now! ;-)

Some Thursday Updates…

Hello mah friends!

First of all, I want to break out the pimp hand and give my lovely friend, Jackie Morse Kessler, a resounding smack.

Jackie’s first book in her new YA series about the four-horsemen of the apocalypse, Hunger, has been released. I adore these covers, and I’ve heard Jackie read from this book–it sounds fabulous:

So go forth, propelled by mah pimp hand, and buy!

In personal news, I’ve restarted the C25K. I fell off the exercise wagon with the move–I go to the gym, but randomly, not enough, and not on a firm schedule. So I’m using the C25K to get back in that wagon’s driver’s seat! To keep it challenging, I’m starting it off at a much higher pace than I was ever running. I’ve learned that a) if I were a car I’d be a hearse and b) for real running (and not ferocious waddling) I really do need to wear my fancy, uncomfortable running bras. OUCH.

In book news, I’m planning on having a Write-a-thon this weekend, in which I finish my Very Rough Draft of Eye of the Tempest. We also have finished cover art. I love it, and I’ll be showing it off as soon as we get the heads up.

Also, Tempest’s Legacy is nearly upon us!  On November first, I’ll start vlogging some teasers, to get you all addled with an . . . . . . tici . . . . . . . . . . . pation . . . . . .

Finally, for those of you in the central/eastern PA region, I’ll be doing a signing in Lancaster. Here’s the info, which is also on my Upcoming Appearances page:

What: Reading, Chatting, Signing in Lancaster, PA!

When: Saturday, November 6, 2010, 2:00-4:00 pm.

Where: Borders #41; 940 Plaza Blvd; Lancaster, PA 17601

Hope to see you there! It will be my first solo signing, and the first event I’ve done that I didn’t organize (knowing I’d have a good turnout), so I’m nervous.

Now I’m off to teach, but see y’all soon. I hope you’re enjoying fall as much as I am. Mmmm…Boots and sweaters. :-)

Nearly Finished: Or, Why It’s Not Always Easy to Nut Up or Shut Up

I’m nearly finished with my rough draft of Eye of the Tempest. In fact, I’m just about to embark on (gutting and re)writing one of the mini-climactic scenes that will shortly lead up to the big bang climax. This is not to say that the book is nearly done. There will still be a lot of editing after my agent and betas read it, and I also have a series of “fixes” I’ve identified that need to be changed before anyone even sees it. I also write what I like to think of as “thin” rough drafts, that I go back and pad with more detail.

But first I have to get to the end. And that’s what I’d like to talk about today–how hard it is to get oneself over that last hump which is the near-end of the book. I think this difficulty consists of a bunch of elements, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Commitment issues! We all have ‘em, to a certain extent. And let’s face it: finishing a book is a commitment. You’ve committed yourself to having written book X, when, conceivably, you could have written books Y, Z, or (unpronounceable symbol, a la Prince, here), instead.
  • Boredom issues! I’ve already moved on, to be honest. Part of me is thinking about the next book, a small part of me is thinking about the next series . . . but here I am, still with Jane in a cave, where we’ve been for months. I love the little minx, but the end stages of a book are a slog, simply because it’s been THIS book for SO long.
  • Deadline anxiety! I spend about 1/4 of the time I should be writing planning what work I need to be doing to meet my deadline. It’s an insidious form of procrastination I find unable to resist. Like shortbread, or men with prison records. (Just kidding, mom! Really! Sort of!)
  • Real life! It’s like the Murphy’s Law of Deadlines–One never has a deadline, say, in the middle of one’s summer vacation, or the dead period in one’s work. Deadlines must always come slap-dash in the middle of a crisis, or the busiest time in your job, etc. Even if you think you’ve scheduled your deadlines well, Murphy’s Law of Deadlines will exert itself, making sure your ceiling caves in or your plumbing fails, just the week before.
  • The near-phobic anxieties we all must endure, to be authors! Authors, no matter how cool we are on the surface, all have to be basket-cases, somewhere, deep inside. We’re all afraid that THIS is the book that sucks. It was fated to suck; it couldn’t NOT suck; and now we have gone forth and hoarked out that suckáge on the page, for all to point at and laugh. This near-phobic anxiety runs on an inverse ratio, so the closer you get to finishing, the more you’re convinced you’re wading through suckáge.

I’m sure there are more hurdles to jump before finishing a book, and would love to hear about some of them, from you. Because then I can spend this afternoon anxiously meditating on everything y’all have said, rather than doing the writing I need to do, today.

Procrastination itself also runs on an inverse ratio: the closer you are to finishing, the more Facebook sings its siren’s song.

Anyway, I’d love to hear from you about why you find finishing a project (any project) difficult. Or you can just use your comment space to tell me to shut the hell up, get off Facebook, and finish this damned chapter. I will then stare at your comment, wide-eyed (and not writing) as I think about just how right you are.
