Happy Pre-New Years!

Well, hello there! I hope you’re having as great a vacation as I am! It’s been non-stop parties this week . . . parties here, parties there, parties EVERYWHERE. Also, loads of catching up with friends from all over.

The good news is, I’ve had a blast and I feel myself again. The bad news is, I’m a few days behind in my revisions. I’ve been working pretty steadily, but not quite steadily enough.

So I think I’m going to take one for the team and not do anything super crazy on New Years. While I’d love to take up all mah friend’s offers to get into Chicago and show it how to swing, I think I have to finish book 4.

The thing is, I’m going back to G’Burg the 2nd, and then I have Three Days of Frantic Preparation for our January residency for our MFA program, then I have the residency, and the day after the residency I fly to London.

So, yeah, it’s going to be nutso. And it will be so much LESS nutso if I have my revisions all done and shipped off BEFORE January 2nd, don’t you think?

What’s your opinion on what I should do? Book 4 or par-tay?

As for book 3, it’s all over the wild. As I said, once I get home I’ll do some Contests, Contests, Contests! And at least one vlog for you. With something cheekeh!

But for right now, here’s some Legacy stuff to wet your whistle:

A great review from Book Series Reviews.

An interview with an international giveaway!

Review from Nocturne Romance Reads

Melissa from My World interviews both Anyan  and Ryu with a contest!(these are all separate links.)

And a recent review of Book 1, Tempest Rising, in case you’re wondering what all the fuss is about. ;-)

If you’ve reviewed or interviewed me, and I haven’t pimped you out, remember you can always bother me on twitter, facebook, or email me at iheartselkies(at)gmail(dot)com.

This’ll probably be my last post till I get back to G’Burg and start the Release Madness for Tempest’s Legacy. Have a FABULOUS New Years, drink something bubbly for me, remember not to make any stupid resolutions but instead make GOALS that you can achieve, and remember to buy Tempest’s Legacy! ;-) I heart you guys, and I can’t wait to see what y’all get up to in the New Year!

Happy Holidays, ERRYBODY!

First off, I’d like to wish everyone a warm and wonderful holiday!

It’s a total winter wonderland here in Illinois, and the snow is still coming down. Here’s the view from my mom’s home office…

It’s like I’m in a snow globe! Awesome!

Lemme just say, I have loved being at home. This pre-Xmas part of the trip has been mostly family and rest and work time. I’ve been sleeping like a cat, and when I’m not sleeping I’m revising Eye and going out with the fam.

Eye of the Tempest is shaping up a treat. and I’m really digging the direction it’s going. I had a Major Treadmill Epiphany (the other thing I’ve been doing, while home, is working out like a crazy woman) in which I realized what was at the heart of my revisions issues. Basically, I’d missed the mark on who Jane is, in this book, after her adventures in Legacy.

So the work is going great, and I hope to have Jane shipped back to the Editrix before New Year’s.  As for the fam, they’re fabulous. And I’ve made tons of ridiculous plans with my Chicago friends for after the holidays, and I’m so looking forward to letting the hair down. And speaking of hair…

Here’s a Before Korean Ladies shot and an After Korean Ladies shot:

I love them so much. Why can’t I take them to Pittsburgh? That said, I love my PA stylist, too, and I’ve taken a picture of the dye Chloe uses on me, so that hopefully we can source it back in PA. Then I can be RED all the time! Yay!

As for the Post Holiday Shenanigans, I can’t WAIT.  My friends in Chicago are some of the smartest, funniest, most loyal people I know, and I can’t wait to soak up their vibe. I feel like I’ve gone a bit dull, and they all agree (that’s the beauty of real friends–they tell you when you’re being stupid). But they’re also on hand for an intervention, and they’ll have me whetted to a razor’s edge in no time. ;-)  That said, it can’t be all play, as I still have a lot of stuff to do before our January MFA residency. But I’ll get it all done, and enjoy some playtime as well.

And speaking of playtime, nearly all my plans are made for my Cheeky European Trip 2011. I’ve got all my train tix booked, and rental flat, etc. I cannot WAIT to go. We’re hitting Paris for an International Ladies Night. Dr. Ruth is going, of course, as well as my friends from Ireland, Denmark, Holland, and Norway. It’s going to be a blast. Then it’s back to England and a bit more travel on my own, this time to visit another friend, whom I’m stupidly excited to see. We’re planning some outrageously naughty shenanigans, and that’s exactly what I need right now. My life has been naughty-free for a while, so no wonder I feel like a pair of kindergarten shears.

I will also be doing some business in London, of course. I’ll be visiting the Orbit UK offices. They’ve got loads afoot there, and we’ll be going over their ideas. I’m also very much hoping to get together with the delightful Philip Palmer, and maybe do some fun promo with him. I also want to convince him that we should write a BBC radio play together, because that would make me the happiest bunny that ever bunnied. Did ya hear that, Philip? ;-)

PS: I’ll be sending you a “Rabbit Heart” blog post shortly, just to sweeten the pot.

So that’s what I’m doing! OH, and Legacy is being spotted ALL over the wild. Because of the holidays, I’m not going to do loads of pre-release stuff. BUT I will be back home in January, doing oodles of contests and stuff, and hoping to take advantage of all the giftcards you’ve received from Santa. ;-)

But I’m not the only one who’s been busy this January, and the ever lovely and fabulous Jackie Kessler has done a fantastic League roundup, of all the stuff we Leaguers have coming out now or very soon.

Another busy person has been Laurel Dinnage, who made these very sweet pictures of Jane! Thanks, Laurel!

I’ve also got an interview up at Savvy Authors, and more to come, shortly. You can also see Jane’s Holiday Wishlist, here, at the Vampire Book Club.

In the meantime, enjoy your holidays, everyone! Y’all have been such a treat for me to get to know, and your support and your love of Jane has meant the world to me. With the class I’m teaching at my new job, I thought a lot about the author/reader relationship this semester, and I’ve realized just how lucky I am to have you. I love knowing you’re out there, and hearing what you have to say about Jane and her adventures. So thank you all, a million times over! I’d send you each and everyone a t-shirt from London, but I’m broke. So go buy Legacy!  ;-)

Merry merry, and all that jazz. *huge hugs*

Jane Rides Again! And a Contest Weiner!

So with everything that’s been happening here at Casa Peeler, it’s like I’ve forgotten one rather important detail…

I’m releasing a book January First!

That said, I’m already getting confirmed reports of people spotting Legacy in the wild. With the holiday season, everything is shipping early, and people want to empty their store rooms. So what a fabulous gift…you can buy the first three books of the Jane True series for all your loved ones! Children adore it, and you won’t have to have that pesky “birds and bees” conversation… just let Jane do it for you! As for pets, they like to chew it up, and the elderly can use it as a pillow.

Or you can read it to see if Jane and that damned barghest FINALLY get around to doing it…..

But if you’re all, “My eyes are tired from wrapping packages,” or “I have developed carpal tunnel from Extreme Dreideling and can no longer hold a book,” have no fear! For all THREE Jane True’s will be out in audiobook by January Third. And let me tell you, they rock.  You have NO IDEA how nervous I was when I found out they were going to be made into audiobooks. I love audibooks, but have listened to some torturous ones in my day. Kate Reinders, however, does an excellent job as Jane. She never overacts and she gets the character. You can tell she’s having fun saying the lines, and she really delivers them just as Jane would. Sometimes, she gives a line more humor than I think it originally held. In short, she rocks!

But what if you’re unsure of whether even to BUY Legacy? What if you’re all, “And who the hell are you, telling me what to buy with my Christmas gift cards? HUH?” Here’s what some other people had to say about Legacy:

Romantic Times gave it 4 1/2 stars AND made it a Top Pick!

Publisher’s Weekly says, “Jane is sure to endear herself to new readers with her charm, sass, and vulnerability, while longtime fans will be thrilled by her magical and emotional growth.”

And as for the Blogosphere, they have been rather loud about this one!

Amberkatze Book Blog

Harriet Klausner (Pakong!)

Book Goggles

Urban Fantasy Investigations

In The Closet With a Bibliophile (love these reviews, and there are links to all 3 books)

My Book Addiction

Thoughts of a Scot

And some other cool lists on which I’ve spotted Jane are Women24′s Top Five Supernatural Series and The Barnes and Noble Book Club’s Top Paranormals of 2010.

In other personally edifying news, I just discovered I have a Wikipedia entry. This makes me stupidly excited, for some reason. Probably because I spend a significant portion of my existence reminding freshmen not to cite from this site.

I also have a blog post and contest running for Wicked Little Pixie’s Thirteen Wicked Days of Christmas, and a contest below (on my site!) that offers an audiobook if you buy Amanda Feral’s “Stocking Full of Coal.”

But speaking of contests, you say, what about YOUR contest for an audiobook of Tempest Rising?Well, the contest can has spoken!

According to the draw, the weiner of either an MP3 CD or a CD of Tempest Rising is Micaella! YAY Micaella!

BUT, because this is my site and I make all the rules, I will ALSO give either an MP3 CD or a CD of TR to Mary Wright. Why? Because she quoted Donne. And because I can. I love Donne!

So if Micaella and Mary will email me at iheartselkies (at) gmail (dot) com, I will send off your prize! Remember to specify whether you want the MP3 CD or the regular CD’s. Realistically, as I’m going home for the holidays today (Sunday the 18th) you will not be getting your prize till after the New Year. But as soon as I come back, I’ll ship it off!

Wish me luck, meanwhile, on the long drive home. I’m so excited to be back in Chicago! I love my new job, but I’m terribly lonely, and it will be so good to have a social life again, if just for a few weeks.

So see you soon and enjoy your holidays! And let me know if you spy Legacy! ;-)

On Kink and Coal: Some Thoughts, Pimpage, and a CONTEST.

It is with HUGE pleasure that I announce the release of Amanda Feral’s first smut foray, A Stocking Full of Coal:

As you can see at the bottom, Stocking is part of Ellora’s Cave’s Merry Kinkmas. Meanwhile, that title, and the book itself, has made me think a lot about kink.

I know, it’s a shocker.

Seriously, though, this book is awesome. Amanda Feral is the zombie socialite creation of Mark Henry, and we first saw her snarking, boffing, and eating (and not in the kinky way) her way through Happy Hour of the Damned, Road Trip of the Living Dead, and Battle of the Network Zombies.

Now she has her own book, and it’s a doozy. Amanda has created Justine Crenshaw, a woman who gets off on people poking her in the bruise. And that’s not a euphemism. I mean a real bruise.

So yeah, it’s dark. But–considering it’s about a bruise fetishist and it’s written by a flesh-eating zombie–it’s also bizarrely romantic. For Mark’s books always work on a number of levels, and this short story is no exception. Yes, it’s a smutty tale of a woman who wants to be poked while she’s poked, but it’s also about acknowledging our own lack of control; the painful acquisition of self-knowledge that only comes with exploring all of our aspects, even the dark ones; and the sort of relationship-compromises we make that are ultimately not compromises, but about genuinely opening ourselves up to another person.

In other words, it’s about just what it says on the package…it’s about kink.

Kink is one of those words we use a lot. Well, I use it a lot. I use it as a high five–”Girl, that is kinkeh!” I use it sarcastically– “I’m going to the grocery store.” “Ooo, kinkeh.” Sometimes I use it to indicate that someone has actually managed to shock me– “Oh. Wow. That is kinky.” Kink, in other words, can mean everything and nothing to me, like so many words we use and abuse in our society.

Dictionaries, meanwhile, agree that kink is something sexual which is “deviant,” or “peculiar.” For most of my friends, however, kink is usually stripped of the negative connotation that such definitions imply. Kink’s not merely something to be dismissed as wrong; instead it’s seen as something enlightening–we focus on the act of overcoming, or at least thinking through, the affective response we get from things that we find to be deviant or peculiar. Such challenges slap us in the face with our own expectations and assumptions and make us think differently about what we consider “normal.” And that’s what kink does, and why it can’t, really, be defined. After all, what I consider kinky is totally banal to others; while things another person considers totally beyond the pale are staid to me.

But we see, in Amanda’s short story, how kink is so much more than a measuring stick by which to judge others by such terms as “deviant” or “peculiar.” Instead, kink is about exploring our dark side, accepting our lack of control, and genuinely sharing ourselves with another person.

Justine knows that she’s got “issues,” and that they’re embodied (quite literally) in her bruise fetish. But that doesn’t matter–it is what it is. It’s her “thing,” but it’s also her shame. She hides her fetish. In doing so, however, she hides herself. And she suffers the consequences.

It’s only when she shares–when she opens up both her pain and her pleasure–that she finds redemption. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but like with most romances, this does have a happy ending. And yet, this happy ending isn’t a deus ex machina easy fix to a broken person. Instead, I think it reflects a reality about sex and sexuality that is very honest and true, even if it’s “packaged” in an imaginary fashion. The bruise fetish may be made up, but what Justine goes through seems very real, to me.

For what Justine really shares, when she shares her fetish, is herself. Not the part that we all present to the world–the J. Alfred Prufrock version, with our collars mounted firmly to our chins–but the stripped-naked, vulnerable core of ourselves. Quite literally, she shows her lover where she hurts, and indicates that she can’t get over that hurt–that she needs to feel it, over and over, to feel alive.

And instead of judging, her lover attempts to understand her, both with his mind and his body. He gives her a form of acceptance that challenges him, in turn. Indulging her fetish confronts his own expectations of paternalism and protectiveness, making him think beyond normative versions of masculine kindness and love to see how an act of apparent cruelty is the real kindness in this strange situation.

In other words, he puts aside his own issues and expectations to explore a woman who excites him. They both open themselves up–an ultimate act of bravery in our often cynical, closed-off world.

So for Kinkmas, maybe explore your kinks. Please don’t think you need to run off and boff the mailman, or commit sex acts on any rooftops. Kinks don’t have to be all that kinky–they’re what make you vulnerable, not your neighbor or your best friend. Try sharing yourself, a little, if there’s someone you think you can trust and who you think deserves that trust.

It’s a hell of a lot more exiting than a partidge in a pear tree, I can assure you. ;-)

And in the meantime, run out and buy Stocking Full of Coal. It’s so good, people. I’ll never look at the edge of a table the same way again, and I already looked at them funny. Meanwhile, for why I heart Mark Henry, check out his vlog on Wicked Little Pixie’s website. Hilarious!

Finally, how about a contest? If you buy Stocking Full of Coal and send me some sort of proof–a pic of you with it loaded on your ereader, the receipt, whatever–and COMMENT on this post to remind me it’s there (my inbox is a mess ;-) )–I’ll enter you to win EITHER an MP3 CD or the CD of Kate Reinders reading Tempest Rising.

Send me your proof to iheartselkies(at)gmail(dot)com.

I’ll randomly choose a winner on Christmas Eve Day, Friday December 24th. This is a separate contest from the one below, in which you can also win the audiobook of TR. ;-)

So go forth, purchase Stocking and enter to win an audiobook! Fun!

Reading and a Contest!

Hey folks! Here’s a little vloggie-woggie I did–a second reading from Tempest’s Legacy. But not just from ANY Tempest’s Legacy . . . from the REAL Tempest’s Legacy! For I came home today to a beautiful big box of bouncing baby bookies. They made my day, and they’re gorgeous.

So I’ve vlogged that promised second reading, and I’ve included a last minute, seat-of-my-pants contest. Details are in the vlog. Comment on the appropriate subject (once I get around to figuring it out on the vlog), and comment to this point. I’ll pick a winner for the contest Saturday, the 18th, 2010, at noon E.T.

Here’s your vlog! Contest deets are at the end…because it was entirely spur of the moment and born of LOVE.

HUGE League Release Day! And a Guest Post!

Hey Errybody! Today’s a HUGE release day for the League of Reluctant Adults (and friends).

Richelle Mead, Dakota Cassidy, and Juliet Blackwell ALL have new releases that YOU MUST BUY NOW. NOW I TELL YOU.

Go to web sites, peruse, and then GO BUY. I can’t wait to read Richelle and Juliet’s latest, and Dakota’s coming out with something totally new with her first Contemporary Romance. Imagine how funny she is with the supernatural? Now take all that snark and apply it to the idea of an ex-trophy wife? Seriously? Wear diapers, people. You have been warned.

As an added layer of pimpage, the lovely Mario Acevedo has graced my blog with a guest post. Yay! For his graphic novels are coming out today, too! FUN!

Say hello to Mario!

Mario’s Guest Post

I’ll admit, I got lucky. A lot of us fantasy writers dream of getting our stories picked up as a comic book or graphic novel. Well, it happened to me.

Last year, I was contacted by IDW Publishing. They had read my urban fantasy novels and asked if I would like to have a comic book treatment of my detective-vampire Felix Gomez. Would I?

The interesting part was IDW didn’t want an adaptation of an existing story but a spin-off with an all-new tale. In fact, they even picked out a line from my first novel, The Nymphos of Rocky Flats, and suggested we build a story around that.

This is an excerpt describing Felix’s first assignment between the time he became a vampire and then arrived at Rocky Flats.

“Besides the Blanford case, there was another assignment that told me you were the man for this. The Han Cobras.”

Chinese heroin smugglers. Ruthless. Invincible. Killed three Federal Drug Enforcement agents, not to mention dozens of foreign cops. Invincible. Except against a vampire.

The next step was pulling my literary agent into the conversation and hammering out a contract. In the meantime, the publisher offered the portfolios of several artists for the panel and cover art. As an artist myself, I thought it was presumptuous of me to pass judgment on artists with professional credential far better than mine. The publisher made it easy, and the two artists he suggested– Alberto Dose for the panels and Pinturero for the covers–were perfect.

Here’s another sample, Elf Embryo, that demonstrates Pinturero’s freaky awesomeness:

I was contracted to write the scripts for four comics and since the concept was mine, to provide guidance to the project. IDW provided sample scripts and comics for reference. Additionally, I had to turn in an author’s bio, promotional copy, and a detailed synopsis of both the overall story and each comic book story. My editor did a thorough job picking through the synopsis and offered suggestions to improve the story. Comic scripts are different from screenplays in that the artists want a lot of detailed descriptions and you can include interior dialog (“thoughts” which are shunned in screenplays). The script can be as long as you feel necessary but you’re limited (in most cases) to twenty-one comic pages to tell your story. The most fun was writing classic lines such as:

BLAM! Ka-POW! BOOM!

Another difference from my previous writing experience was how collaborative the process was working with a comic book publisher versus a traditional book publisher. With traditional book publishers, sometimes it seems that even as the author, I’m out of the loop in a lot of what happens with my novels. That wasn’t the case with IDW as they were constantly cluing me in. They would submit pencil drafts of work-in-progress for my comments. (Which were minor. Alberto Dose in particular has been doing comic books for a long time, and I respected his interpretation of my script.) Another difference was the brisk production schedule. In traditional publishing, you can expect a year–or longer–from the time you submit a manuscript and publication. IDW wanted the first comic on the street in less than six months after I’d turned in the script. And another big difference between comic books and novels publishers, IDW asked for cover ideas and actually ran with my ideas!

For example, for the cover of issue #2, I suggested that the artist incorporate a crow (used by vampires as messengers), Hei Men Dao (a rogue vampire shaman), Qian Ning (the love interest), and separately, Felix involved in a shoot-out.

Here’s the first draft.

We kicked the concept around and Pinturero came back with:

Closer but Felix wasn’t there yet.
On the third try, Pinturero nailed it. Awesome. My favorite. Felix at his bad-ass best.

Here is a sample of panel art in pencil form.

Alberto Dose was also contracted to provide alternative covers for all four issues. Here’s his take on issue #2.

And what’s the point of having vampires and ruthless gangsters if you can’t include a little kinkiness like topless bondage gear and ball gags?

The four issues of the comic book have been bundled into the graphic novel, Killing the Cobra: Chinatown Trollop, and is out December 7. The embossed cover is amazing!

On sale at your local comic book store, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.

Thanks Nicole. Give my regards to Jane True.

Happy fanging!

Jane True Über Alles!

First of all, let me crow to the winds that I’ve just sent Book Four, Eye of the Tempest, off to my editrix! I always have stuff to do to them at this stage, so it’s not done. But it’s a HUGE first step. And, again, I’d like to thank my AMAZING beta readers (Christie Ko, James Clawson, and Mary Lois White), along with my critique partner, the lovely Diana Rowland, for giving me great ideas for revisions on this round. The book is 100% stronger now than it was when they received it the first time, and that’s all because of their great insights and suggestions. I have the best friends EVAH.

And speaking of cool friends, check this out! Sophie Littlefield, about whom I blogged last week, was named as one of 2010s Most Notable crime authors by the New York Times! Here’s the link! I’m so excited for her, I could spit. I’m so lucky to have such talented people in my life, especially when they’re also awesome human beings who enjoy meat from zeppelins!

I’m also lucky to have my books out in Germany! You can read my excellent German (I am so fluent!) here. There’s a “search inside” sort of deal like they have on Amazon, that allows you to flip through the first forty pages. I’ve also got an interview with Darkstar up in English and in German. Isn’t my German amazing?

And I warned you that I’d probably have another REALLY ACCURATE German cover for the sequel, and I was not disappointed. For Splash 2, I mean, Tracking the Tempest, we have the following:

While this appears to be a book about how Mermaid-Barbie kidnaps and tortures Santa’s favorite reindeer, it’s actually Tracking the Tempest. Okay, they are beautiful covers, and I’m very grateful to be published in Germany. But if you picked this up expecting some Little Mermaid-esque shenanigans, don’t blame me!

Updates and Some Book Recs for the Holidays!

First of all, sorry I was a bit MIA over the holidays. Went to Chicago, ate like a pig, got a bit of a stomach bug–the usual holiday madness.

But I’m back, and l I have some fun things to report!

First off, Publisher’s Weekly liked Jane’s latest adventures in Tempest’s Legacy, which is always great to hear. PW writes, “Jane is sure to endear herself to new readers with her charm, sass, and vulnerability, while longtime fans will be thrilled by her magical and emotional growth.” Yay!

Secondly, I’ve foisted myself onto a few more conventions! My appearances page is updated with such additions as August appearances at RomCon, in Denver, and Authors After Dark, in Philadelphia. I’m also doing another appearance in Lancaster, in January. Fun!

I’ve also got a little blog post up on Strange Candy’s Jen Rardin tribute, that is attached to a contest. Tracking The Tempest is also up for “Most Unique Cover,” at All Things Urban Fantasy, along with a slew of other Orbit covers. Personally, I’m digging the cover next to mine on the contest, the red and black one. Hot! But you can go there to vote on your favorite cover, and there’s some really fun stuff to pick from.

Finally, I’ve just learned that Tracking the Tempest has sold in Germany. Tempest Rising, translated as Nachtsturme (!!) will be coming out there this month. So hopefully we’ll have another marvelously accurate cover like this one, soon:

In other news, I have finally been able to read again. And I finally read two of My Favorite Ladies’s books, Juliet Blackwell’s and Sophie Littleton’s. I had high hopes for these novels, as I already have HUGE girl crushes on both of their authors. But I wasn’t just happy with their work, I was blown away. They’re writing completely different mysteries, but in equally entertaining ways.

Let’s start with Juliet… Here are her bookie-wooks that I’ve just read….

, the first in the series, and the second,

These books are adorable! Take them with you on holiday; they ache to be read on a beach, or curled up with on your couch in front of the fire. I love the heroine, and I love that these are all about the paranormal elements but are still definitely mysteries. Cross-genre hybrids are all the rage right now, and these books prove why dipping into other genres injects such life into established tropes. Who knew that the cozy mystery would lend itself so well to magic, or witch-politics?

Next we have Sophie. I read this one in one night:

only to begin motoring through:

These books are amazing. Gritty, hilarious, and genuinely scary at times, I loved them. They’re as “real” as novels can get, in the sense that there’s no magic, supernatural creatures, or the like. And, to be honest, I was a bit nervous starting them as I only ever seem to read things with elves, or their equivalent, nowadays. But I adored these books, and can’t recommend them highly enough. They’re totally different from Juliet’s, but equally as refreshing, exciting, and fun.

So my girl crushes have ponied up, big time. Now I just have to read Rachael Herron’s book–you’re next on the list, girlie!–and my Triumvirate Of Female Awesomeness will be complete.

And to think I got to eat prime rib with these women??? I’m a lucky gal.
